That's according to researchers from the University of Surrey, who have discovered something slightly bizarre about how we heal: it looks like wounds sustained during the day seem to heal twice as fast as those that happen at night...

The team decided to test how time of day might might affect healing after discovering that in skin cells called fibroblasts (which help close up a wound), certain genes may switch on and off at different times, New Scientist reports.

After analysing data from a hospital burns unit in Manchester, the scientists found that, on average, daytime wounds seem to heal MUCH faster: in only 17 days, while similar nighttime burns took 28 days to recover from.

'We found that how well you heal depends on what time of the day you're injured,' said researcher Nathaniel Hoyle in the journal Science Translational Medicine. 'Healing in the day can occur 60 per cent faster.'

The team now think our cells must be linked to our circadian rhythm or 'body clock', perhaps because we're most likely to be injured when out and about in the day.

'This research adds to the accumulating evidence that "time of day" or "circadian rhythmicity" matters in medicine,' added researcher Derk-Jan Dijk. 'The question is how we can make use of this knowledge, and whether it can change clinical practice and help patients.'
