What Your Sleeping Position Says About You, Apparently

What Your Sleeping Position Says About You, Apparently The position you rest in while going to sleep could provide an insight into where you live, your age and even your profession, new research suggests. The study asked 15,000 people across the globe, including 5,000 people in the UK, about their sleeping positions, then analysed the results for key trends.Sleeping on the left was found to be the most popular position overall and people who slept is this way were found to be more likely to be university educated than any other position.Using the findings, bed manufacturer Sealy UK has created a break down of what your sleeping position could reveal about you.

The data of more than 215,000 people, analysed by Queen Mary University of London, found at least 60.9% of people who try smoking repeat the habit daily, at least temporarily.

Study authors said the findings provide strong support for prioritising efforts to reduce cigarette experimentation among adolescents.

While smoking as a teen was once a rite of passage, researchers reveal the recent reduction in the number of smokers overall could be down to the fact teenagers are already “experimenting” with cigarettes less than they used to.

Stub It Out This October And Feel Healthier For Life

Stub It Out This October And Feel Healthier For Life Stoptober is upon us and thousands of people around the UK are trying to quit cigarettes and alcohol for an entire month. Brain

At least three out of five people who start smoking go on to become daily smokers , a pioneering study has found. The research selected asked respondents whether they’d ever tried a cigarette and ever smoked daily .

It is striking that very few non- smokers who try e- cigarettes become daily vapers, while such a large proportion on non- smokers who try conventional cigarettes become daily smokers . The presence of nicotine is clearly not the whole story."

Data was compiled from eight studies from the UK, USA, Australia and New Zealand to gather their results. The research selected asked respondents whether they’d ever tried a cigarette and ever smoked daily.

The team calculated that overall 60.3% of respondents had said they had ever tried a cigarette in their life, and among those, an estimated 68.9% said they had progressed to daily smoking.

Because the surveys used different methodologies and thus yielded different results, researchers explained the estimated 68.9% “conversion rate” from experimentation to daily smoking has a margin of error, between 60.9% and 76.9%.

Commenting on the findings, lead researcher Professor Peter Hajek, from Queen Mary, said: “This is the first time that the remarkable hold that cigarettes can establish after a single experience has been documented from such a large set of data.

“In the development of any addictive behaviour, the move from experimentation to daily practice is an important landmark, as it implies that a recreational activity is turning into a compulsive need. We’ve found that the conversion rate from ‘first time smoker’ to ‘daily smoker’ is surprisingly high, which helps confirm the importance of preventing cigarette experimentation in the first place.

“The UK is seeing a dramatic reduction in smoking at the moment and this tallies with recent findings that only 19% of 11-15 year olds have ever tried a cigarette, so the good news is that we are on the right track.”

Given the high conversion rate found in all existing surveys, the researchers suggested  at least some of the reduction in smoking prevalence observed over the past 20 years is likely due to reduced experimentation with cigarettes among adolescents.

'Life-Saving' Cancer Scanners Could Be Coming To A Supermarket Car Park Near You

'Life-Saving' Cancer Scanners Could Be Coming To A Supermarket Car Park Near You Cancerhealth scanners are set to appear in supermarket car parks across the UK, in a bid to boost diagnosis rates and save lives.NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens will today announce the scaling up of an innovative scheme that catches lung cancer early by scanning patients. The scheme, offering smokers and ex-smokers free health checks and on-the-spot scans, has been piloted in Manchester with incredible results. Michael Brady, 64, went for a 20-minute lung check as part of the pilot and, within a week, was told he had cancer at an early stage.“I’m really grateful I went for this lung check,” he said. “It’s saved my life.”The pilot programme scanned more than 2,500 people in three deprived areas of Manchester (where lung cancer is more prevalent) and discovered 46 cases of cancer. Of these, 80% were early stage one and two diagnoses. The scanners picked up one cancer for every 33 patients scanned over the course of a year and quadrupled the early diagnosis rates for lung cancer in Manchester.Speaking at the Economist War on Cancer event in London today, Simon Stevens will highlight the success of the Manchester scanners and will announce that the NHS is to fund scanners in other areas of the UK as part of a national programme to diagnose cancer earlier and improve cancer care.

(CNN) -- At least three out of five people who experiment with a cigarette end up becoming daily smokers at some point, a new study finds. Of the responses, just over 60% had ever tried a cigarette , and among those, almost 69% reported that they had gone on to become daily smokers .

However, they did point out questions can be raised over the recall accuracy people have in surveys concerning their smoking history, so more research may be needed in this area.

The survey is published in full in the journal Nicotine & Tobacco Research.

Here's why ex-smokers should eat lots of tomatoes and apples .
If you’ve added quitting smoking to your New Year’s resolution list, then first of all, congratulations. The study started in 2002, when the researchers looked at the diets and lung health of 650 adults. The researchers then reassessed those 650 people in 2012. The researchers found that people's lungs tended to stay healthier if they ate more than two tomatoes or three portions of fresh fruit a day, compared to people who ate fewer tomatoes or fresh fruit a day. The affect extended to ex-smokers, whose lungs stayed healthier for longer if they ate the same amounts of fruit every day—which, in turn, suggests the diet can help restore lung health.
