Leona Lewis on good terms with Simon Cowell

Leona Lewis on good terms with Simon Cowell Leona Lewis thinks Simon Cowell is great, despite leaving his record label. The X Factor winner was signed to the music mogul’s SyCo Music for seven years before announcing in June last year that they had decided to part ways. Now the 30-year-old is back with a new album I Am, and a new label in Island Records, but still has a lot of respect for her former boss. “The thing is I had been with Simon’s label for seven years and it was sort of naturally coming to the end really,” she explained to BBC News. “It’s all amicable and he’s great and has been so supportive but it was just time to move on.” However it wasn’t a decision that Leona made lightly. The singer had smash hit singles like Bleeding Love and Run while with SyCo Music and did wonder if she would be able to keep the momentum in her career by making such a big change. “It was a hard decision because obviously being somewhere for a long time, building relationships, I loved the people I was working with, I had a great team around me,” she continued. “I loved working with Simon, so it was a hard decision, but it was just time for me to do something different.” Leona put her heart and soul into I Am, and enjoyed the challenge of creating it in a new environment. While the album looks at relationship breakdowns, it isn’t just about romantic ones. “It’s definitely been a process writing this album, I feel like the step away and kind of creating the album by myself really at first, independently, was quite liberating and empowering,” she added. “So that is definitely a theme throughout the record. It touches on a lot of different things, different relationships, break-ups that I’ve been through but also kind of how I felt stepping away from my previous label and going out and doing things alone, it was kind of scary.

Reacting to reports the new mum had been signed up as a guest judge for £500,000 , the TV mogul said bluntly: “It’s bulls***.”

Cheryl’s last appearance on The X Factor was as a judge in 2015. She has since given birth to baby Bear – born in March – with partner Liam Payne.

In her first stint in 2008 Cheryl mentored winner Alexandra Burke. She also saw Joe McElderry to victory the following year.

They repaired their fractured relationship back in 2014 after falling out when he sacked her from X Factor USA three years earlier. But relations between Simon Cowell and Cheryl may have cooled off once more after the music mogul claimed the pair haven' t spoken in six months

But in 2011 Cheryl, 34, quit the UK show to join the US version – and was then axed by Cowell in the auditions round over claims viewers were struggling with her Geordie accent. After the dust settled Cowell admitted: “I got it wrong. She was humiliated on both sides of the Atlantic.”

Meanwhile hitmaker Cowell has praised former Spice Girl Mel B for her strength during her bitter divorce.

Mel, who judges with him on America’s Got Talent, filed for divorce in March after 10 years of marriage.

She claimed her husband Stephen Belafonte had subjected her to “emotional and physical abuse”.

Speaking at his record company’s summer party, Cowell, 57, said: “Mel was soaking it all up. She only told me two days before she served the papers. I didn’t know this was going on. “I want to create an award I can give her, like some kind of strong woman award.”

Belafonte is said to have accused Mel, 42, of having an affair with Cowell, and has always denied claims of domestic abuse.

Attending Wednesday’s glitzy London bash with girlfriend Lauren Silverman , 39, Cowell also insisted he will not be changing any of his talent show panelists in the UK or the US – easing Mel’s fears over her future.

He said: “The whole America’s Got Talent panel – they’re brilliant. Now with BGT and X Factor... you won’t get better than that.”
