The former England defender died at the age of 44 after collapsing at Tottenham's training centre, where he was coach of the Under-23s, following a cardiac arrest.Born in Homerton, east London, Ugochuku started out on the long road towards becoming a professional at Senrab Football Club, the local team which can count the likes of Ray Wilkins, Bobby Zamora, Jermain Defoe, Sol Campbell and John Terry among its former players.

Ugo Ehiogu has been taken to hospital after collapsing at the training ground. “We can confirm that Ugo Ehiogu is currently in hospital after collapsing at our Training Centre earlier today,” Tottenham tweeted today.

Tottenham's under-23s coach Ugo Ehiogu has been rushed to hospital after collapsing on Thursday.

The 44-year-old former Aston Villa and Middlesbrough player was taken ill at the club's training centre.

Spurs revealed the news via Twitter:

The north London club added: "Everyone at the club sends their best wishes to Ugo and his family. We shall continue to provide updates when we have further information."

The Homerton-born defender also played for West Brom, Leeds United, Rangers and Sheffield United.

He was a member of the Aston Villa team which lost in the final of the 2000 FA Cup at the old Wembley Stadium, and collected four England caps.

Ehiogu joined Spurs in a coaching capacity three years ago.

Ugo Ehiogu was a standard bearer for aspiring football coaches, according to Tottenham academy coaches Kenny Jackett and Taff Rahman. Tottenham U23 coach Ehiogu died last week, aged 44, after suffering a cardiac arrest at Tottenham's training ground and being rushed to hospital.Former Rotherham and Millwall boss Jackett has been coaching at Tottenham's academy since the turn of the year, and speaking at Kick It Out's Raise Your Game conference on Monday, Jackett said Spurs youngsters are still coming to terms with Ehiogu's death.
