She also posted qualifying marks on the uneven bars and beam – where she will be joined in both by her elder sister Becky, making her first major appearance since re-considering a decision to retire in the wake of a personally disappointing Rio Olympics.

Ellie Downie told Press Association Sport: "I definitely exceeded my expectations. I never know how I good I am at all-around until I look up at the scoreboard and it's always a big surprise.

"I felt a bit nervous and my warm-up on the bars didn't go quite right. But I settled down and I'm really happy with how I performed. I feel like I'm pretty much up there in the world right now."

Becky Downie, the reigning and two-time European champion on the uneven bars, qualified for both her apparatus finals, vindicating her decision to commit to another cycling in the wake of the Rio Olympics.

Ellie Downie secures European all-around title in Romania

Ellie Downie secures European all-around title in Romania Ellie Downie became the first British gymnast to be crowned a European all-around champion after a thrilling finish saw her edge Hungary's Zsofia Kovacs to claim gold in Cluj. The 17-year-old had trailed her rival throughout but nailed a dramatic final floor routine to beat Kovacs by just 0.333 of a point with Melanie de Jesus Santos of France a relatively distant third.Watched by Romanian gymnastics great Nadia Comaneci, who won the same title for three consecutive years from 1975, Downie maintained the form which has also swept her into an unprecedented all four individual finals this weekend.

Elissa " Ellie " Downie (born 20 July 1999 in Nottingham) is a British artistic gymnast and sister of Olympian Becky Downie . She represented Great Britain at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics. A prodigious junior, Downie , at the age of 15

The 24-year-old admitted she considered retirement but was spurred to continue by her desire to crown her career with an individual world medal, having won bronze with the team in Glasgow in 2015.

Downie said: "If you'd asked me last year whether I'd be at these Championships I'd have said no. But I think that was mostly due to disappointment with how I performed in Rio.

"One of the reasons I decided to stay was that I still haven't achieved my individual world medal. In Rio I made mistakes but I did enough to prove that I have still got it in me."

Claudia Fragapane marked her return to major competition by qualifying for the floor final in second place, her score of 13.766 beaten only by team-mate Ellie Downie.

Fragapane only missed out on qualifying for the beam because of the rule which only permits two gymnasts from the same country to compete in each individual final.

But she shrugged off suggestions that a lighting malfunction midway through her performance had hindered her chances of earning a higher score on the apparatus.

Fragapane said: "I noticed the lights flicker off just before I went for my difficult move, and obviously it did affect me a little bit because I didn't know what was going on.

"But I just had to get on with it – I couldn't blame the lights. I did the beam and I stuck the routine and I'm really happy with myself – even more proud because of what happened with the lights."

Sixteen-year-old Alice Kinsella, who was only called up as a late replacement on Tuesday after an injury sustained by Georgia-Mae Fenton, also made the cut for Friday's all-around final.

Both the men's and women's all-around finals are set to be contested on Friday, with James Hall and Joe Fraser having qualified in the men's competition.
