Big-impact NFL free agent signings only begin in March. Clearly, they don’t end there. The Ravens picking up Jeremy Maclin 10 days after the Chiefs unexpectedly cut him loose, proves that once again.

Every season features important acquisitions long after free agency opens, sometimes on the eve of training camp, sometimes later. Ryan Fitzpatrick rejoined the Jets in late July last year; Dwight Freeney signed with the Falcons after camp had opened. The results were quite different for both teams, but that hardly dilutes the meaning of the moves at the time.

This year, after Maclin got released for salary cap purposes, the Jets did the same with veteran linebacker David Harris and announced they would part with wide receiver Eric Decker, as well. There are also aging vets who are candidates for very late pickups, if at all … including Freeney, for the third straight offseason.

Meanwhile, there’s a still-young quarterback who went to the Super Bowl recently who just can’t quite fit some team’s scheme, or salary structure, or culture, or something ... it’s not quite clear at this point.

Situations change fast, so this list is at risk of becoming out-of-date fast. But these were some of the notable names still available three months after free agency started.

WR Eric Decker: The Jets acknowledged on the same day they released Harris that Decker was either getting traded or cut. Early speculation was that he might join Maclin in Baltimore, and he has visited Tennessee. Teams don't seem worried that he missed most of last season with shoulder surgery; they know he averaged nearly 1,100 yards receiving in the four years before that.

(UPDATE: Decker agreed to a one-year deal with the Titans.)

DE Dwight Freeney: At 37, Freeney can’t be counted out as an effective pass rusher any more than he was the previous two seasons in Arizona and, then, Atlanta. The Falcons are keeping the door open for him, and he clearly still wants to play. He can be a sacker-for-hire at least one more time for one more contender.

CB Darrelle Revis: A prime candidate for a very late, very cost-effective (read: cheap) pick-up as the season draws near. Revis turns 32 in July, but he said back in March, after his assault case in Pittsburgh was dismissed, that he wants to keep playing. The consensus still appears to be that he’ll have to do it someplace other than lockdown corner.

WR Vincent Jackson: The 34-year-old, who has played 12 seasons, has said he wants a 13th year, and that he’s willing to be patient about it. His knee, which kept him out for all but five games last year in Tampa Bay, will likely have the biggest say. If he’s healthy, teams could do a lot worse than a big target who can make the tough catches.

LB David Harris: The latest surprise cut, after 10 years as a mainstay on the Jets’ defense. He’s 33, but if not for the Jets looking to cut payroll (and purge veterans overall), he’d still be one of their best defensive players and a recognized leader. That has to be of value to a contender.

C Nick Mangold: Another Jets casualty, Mangold missed serious time for the first time in his career last year, but he’s apparently ready to play now. He’s been tied to seemingly half the teams in the league, but no one has taken the plunge.

S Jairus Byrd: An unfortunate flop in New Orleans, plagued by injuries and underwhelming play in three seasons after signing a big free-agent deal. The guy who had 22 interceptions and went to three Pro Bowls in Buffalo hasn’t been seen in a while. But defensive backs are always in demand, so someone should call eventually.

CB Brandon Flowers: The unwelcome combo of a high salary and an injury-wrecked season meant the L.A. (by that time) Chargers weren’t going to keep him around for a fourth season. Ironically, he landed in San Diego in 2014 after an unexpected June release by the Chiefs.

DE Jared Odrick: He’s two years removed from a big contract signing with the Jaguars, one of several over the previous two offseasons that were widely praised at the time, but didn’t pan out for one reason or another. He had a wide variety of injuries last season, and how that affects his prospects now remains to be seen.

QB Colin Kaepernick: Had some success earlier in his career with the 49ers, but to be fair, he’s no Ryan Nassib. Not that anyone ever truly could be.
