CC Sabathia is out for several weeks. Masahiro Tanaka is healthy, just performing horribly. At least Aroldis Chapman — who the Yankees, out of necessity, pushed back into action earlier than expected — pitched well in Sunday night’s loss to the A’s.

That’s a quick summary of the pitching issues facing the Yankees, who are on a season-high six-game losing streak as they return home for a three-game series against the Angels that begins Tuesday.

Sabathia was put on the 10-day DL with a strained left hamstring after his June 13 appearance in Anaheim, a 3-2 loss to the Angels that started the Yanks’ current slide. General manager Brian Cashman expects Sabathia to be sidelined for at least six weeks.

Over New York’s just-completed seven-game west coast road trip, Michael Pineda and Luis Severino were the only starters to have made it through six innings.

Tanaka, he of the $155 million contract, continues to get shelled. In Saturday’s 5-2 loss at Oakland, he served up three home runs and lasted just four innings. He’s taken the loss in six of his last seven starts, and his ERA has fattened to 6.34.

Whatever it is that’s troubling the Yankees ace, it’s not his health, the team insists.

"It’s something we haven’t seen before," manager Joe Girardi said after Saturday’s game, via the New York Post. "The last three years, he’s been really good at ... self-correcting. For whatever reason, this year, he’s having a hard time doing it. Go back to work."

June 18, 1977: When Reggie Jackson and Billy Martin clashed at Fenway When discussing baseball history, it’s fun to look back at every aspect of the game: the good, the bad and the ugly. On June 18, 1977, the Yankees experienced the ugly in more than one way. Forty years ago today, the Yankees and the Red Sox played a game on national television. Sounds familiar, right? And the game was a heated contest that featured a war of words that nearly turned into a nasty brawl.

Tanaka said through an interpreter, "Obviously, I want to go deeper into the game."

As for Chapman, the closer retired all three batters he faced in the eighth inning of Sunday’s loss, although he acknowledged that had it not been for the team’s losing streak, he may have pitched another minor league rehab game instead of flying to California for the final game of the road trip.

The lefty has been dealing with an inflamed rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder, and Sunday was his first major league appearance since May 12. He pitched for Double-A Trenton on Friday night, but since Monday was an off day, the team decided he would get into Sunday’s game no matter the situation.

Chapman said he felt good, and Girardi gave something for the Yankees to hang their hats on as they look to get back on a winning track.

"He looked pretty good to me," Girardi said. "It’s a big power arm to have back. It lengthens our bullpen."
