Saint-Etienne 0-3 Southampton: Match Review

Saint-Etienne 0-3 Southampton: Match Review Southampton ended their pre-season tour of France as they won 3-0 with a very impressive performance against Saint-Etienne. Mauricio Pellegrino made only three changes to the side that drew to Brentford, as Jack Stephens, Ryan Bertrand and Manolo Gabbiadini all got their first starts of pre-season. The first half was a dull one, with no clear cut chances from either side, but Southampton came close, with Gabbiadini just missing on a few occasions. It wasn’t just Saints that had chances, as Saint-Etienne gained a few shots on goal nearing the end of the first 45, but Southampton looked the better side from the first half. Half time saw only one change, as Stuart Taylor came on (yes, you heard me correctly) for Fraser Forster to make his first ever appearance in a Saints shirt. Saint-Etienne had the first chance of the second half, as Jonathan Bamba hit the post with an effort from outside the box. But Southampton replied with a great effort to go in front, as a Jeremy Pied cross found the head of Sofiane Boufal, but his low header was well saved by ASSE keeper Stephane Ruffier. Southampton finally got the breakthrough in the 64th minute, as some fantastic, fast paced build up saw Matt Targett produce a fine, powerful cross into the box, and Manolo Gabbiadini rose to head home from 15-yards into the top corner to give Saints the lead.

Matt Targett , the latest left-back off Southampton 's production line, has penned a five - year deal with his boyhood club. The 19-year-old has impressed since breaking into the first team this season, with his debut coming in August's Capital One Cup defeat of Millwall.

By signing this contract, it means that Forster’s stay at the club could rise to eight years after signing for Saints from Celtic in a £10 million deal in 2014. Southampton have announced the re-signing of academy product Matt Targett on a new five-year contract through to 2022.

The left-back has represented England at Under-19, U20 and U21 level and is viewed as a long-term prospect at St Mary's.

After starting the first three matches of last season, Targett was restricted to five Premier League appearances by a troublesome hamstring injury.

However, the defender has returned from surgery to start two games in pre-season as he looks to challenge Ryan Bertrand for a starting berth.

"I'm really happy to sign. I’ve been at the club since I was eight so to extend my time here is only a good thing," Targett said.

"I think the injury has only helped me improve physically and mentally. I think I feel the best I've ever felt.

"I've come back from it all and got my fitness back, I am feeling fitter and stronger so it’s all positive at the moment."

Targett will hope to be involved when Southampton open their Premier League campaign at home to Swansea City on August 12.

Mauricio Pellegrino's side have one final friendly scheduled before that match as they host Sevilla on Saturday.
