The Premier League is back, and Southampton will open their 2017/18 campaign with a home clash against Swansea City.

Saints head into the game off the back of a mixed pre-season. Mauricio Pellegrino’s side clinched two wins, drew twice, and lost once.

However, in what will be Pellegrino’s first competitive match as Saints boss, they’ll be hoping to put in a good performance in front of the St Mary’s faithful, with a win on the agenda to kick-start the season.

The hosts will be in a considerably good state for the game. There are no notable injuries, with Alex McCarthy still sidelined with an unknown injury. However, Virgil van Dijk is, of course, out of contention as he continues to try and force through a move.

Southampton 0-0 Swansea - Match report

Southampton 0-0 Swansea - Match report Southampton were left to rue their missed chances as Mauricio Pellegrino’s men recorded a 0-0 draw at St Mary’s. It only took one minute for Saints to mark their first attempt on target as Ryan Bertrand’s corner was met by Manolo Gabbiadini, who’s header clipped the top of the crossbar. Southampton should’ve opened the scoring two minutes later, as Nathan Redmond found the overlapping run of Bertrand down the left-hand side, his low cross found Dusan Tadic in the six-yard box in front of Lukasz Fabianski, but his shot somehow went wide and the score remained goalless. Swansea themselves did have a strong attempt at goal, Wayne Routledge chased the ball down their left-hand side, his first time cross was well met by Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham, his header was inches wide. Southampton dominated the first half with the possession, although clear-cut chances weren’t as frequent due to the lack of a final pass or that finishing touch. Mayo Yoshida went for the spectacular around ten yards from goal, despite the bicycle kick not going too far wide, the simple option looked to have been the most rewarding. It was Yoshida again, deep into the second half who had the chance to break the deadlock, but his header from around four yards out could only find the fans sat in the Chapel end of St Mary’s. The final chance of the game, a stoppage time free-kick, taken by Yoshida, lacked that crucial bit of curl which would’ve taken the ball past a helpless Fabianski. Southampton had 27 attempts on target, compared to the Swans’ two. It has now been seven competetive games since Southampton last scored at St Mary’s and despite the positive playing style, many will be wondering how Saints didn’t win today and whether Southampton’s finishing will continue to worry.
