West Brom have been boosted by the news that veteran defender Gareth McAuley is on the comeback trail after completing 45 minutes for the club's under-23 team earlier this week.

The 37-year-old played the first half of their game against Bournemouth, having recovered from a thigh injury.

McAuley last played a competitive fixture in early June when lasting just 25 minutes of Northern Ireland's World Cup Qualifier against Azerbaijan.

Speaking after the match with the U23s, the former Lincoln, Leicester and Ipswich player told the Baggies' website: "It was good to get the old stripes on again after a frustrating time for me.

"It was an interesting experience. I looked around the team and felt old enough to be everyone's dad.

"But it feels good again. Now it's a question of trying to get that place back in the starting XI. The competition doesn't get any easier with the players we have been signing!"

West Brom player ratings: Manchester City (Cup) .
West Brom were sent crashing out of the League Cup on Wednesday night as they lost to Manchester City. The Baggies were beaten 2-1 by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City at The Hawthorns, but gave the Champions League side a run for their money. Leroy Sane gave City the lead early on, but Claudio Yacob equalised in the second half for West Brom. This was shortly after his tackle led to Ilkay Gundogan having to go off injured. Sane then quickly had City back in front and won the game for the vistors. A swift counter-attack for City sent Sane through and he rasped a terrific strike past Ben Foster to send his side into the next round. Tony Pulis can now fully concentrate on the Premier League as he aims to push West Brom into the top ten, as they look to progress from last season.
