Three Carson Wentz touchdown passes helped the Philadelphia Eagles overcome the Carolina Panthers in a narrow 28-23 victory.

A late charge from the Panthers in the fourth quarter was not enough to see off the Eagles, with Cam Newton throwing three interceptions.

The quarterback helped the Panthers claim the first touchdown of the night with a 16-yard run but he suffered a hard fall late in the game after a dramatic leap near the line fell just short of the end zone.

Wentz, meanwhile, threw for 222 yards and a trio of touchdowns passes to Zach Ertz in the second and third quarters and Nelson Agholor in the fourth.

A final drive which would have seen a Carolina victory did not come off, turning the ball over at midfield, and ending the game at 28-23 to keep the Eagles at the top of the NFC.

Fletcher Cox's return bolsters already stout Eagles front .
The Eagles defense was other-worldly against the Panthers, holding Carolina running backs to just 1 yard on 13 carries in a 28-23 victory. Defensive tackle Fletcher Cox was a big reason why. The six-year veteran returned from a calf injury and had an immediate impact Thursday, stuffing Jonathan Stewart for a 1-yard gain on Carolina's first play from scrimmage."I pushed the gas pedal from the first play," Cox said following the win. "That way I knew where I was physically."Cox also created the first of three Cam Newton interceptions, hitting the Panthers quarterback as he threw the ball from his own 14-yard line.
