Steven Stamkos was on target as the Tampa Bay Lightning recorded an impressive 5-4 victory against defending NHL champions the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Stamkos' second-period effort was the Tampa Bay star's first goal since November after he missed most of last season following knee surgery.

Slater Koekkoek beat Antti Niemi twice while Victor Hedman and Nikita Kucherov also scored as the Lightning improved to 3-1 at this early stage of the season.

Pittsburgh, whose record drops to 2-2-1, had goals from Jake Guentzel, Conor Sheary, Bryan Rust and Matt Hunwick.
