Brazil doctor gives update on Philippe Couthinho's fitness

Brazil doctor gives update on Philippe Couthinho's fitness Philippe Coutinho could make a playing return for Brazil against England if his recovery keeps going well according to Brazil’s national team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar. Lasmar told Globo Esporte on Monday that “[Coutinho] is in the final phase of recovery. The possibility of him playing against Japan is remote, but we work to make sure he’s available against England. Tomorrow will do a little more intense physical work. If things go well, he will start working on the ball on Wednesday.” This news will be bitter sweet for Liverpool as they’ll be happy to have their player fit again but probably would have preferred him to miss the England game so he can fully prepare to face Southampton. Coutinho has sat out of Liverpool’s last three games with an adductor injury in his thigh. Fortunately for The Reds, they have been able to win every game that the 25-year-old has missed. His return will bolster the team’s attacking weaponry and with the highest number of Premier League goals from outside the box since February 2013 (17), Jurgen Klopp will hope that Coutinho can get back to his scintillating best ready for the busy festive period. The Brazilian will probably be eased back into playing to avoid any recurrence of the injury but there is no doubting that when he returns to full fitness he will continue to be one of the most valuable players in the Premier League.

Gareth Southgate's England face world champions Germany at Wembley on Friday before hosting Brazil four days later.

The 25-year-old Coutinho has not featured for Liverpool since their 4-1 Premier League defeat against Tottenham Hotspur on October 22 after straining his abductor muscle.

Brazil's team doctor confirmed Coutinho had not recovered in time to face Japan in Friday's friendly, but there seems to be hope for any England fan wanting to see him in action in London.

"Coutinho has an adductor muscle injury in his left thigh," doctor Rodrigo Lasmar was quoted as saying by Globo Esportes.

"The chances that he will play against Japan are tiny. He could be on the bench and play a few minutes. But we are working to make him available against England."

The Brazil squad has been preparing in Paris for the two matches and has scheduled training sessions at Parc des Princes, where its Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar is based, on Tuesday and Wednesday.
