Henrik Stenson has withdrawn from the European Tour's season-ending DP World Tour Championship due to a rib injury.

The 2016 Open champion appeared to suggest he sustained the issue in an unorthodox promotional stunt ahead of the WGC-HSBC Champions, in which he was suspended in mid-air and posed as a superhero with a cape.

Stenson denied that was the case last week and a scan on the injury has ruled him out of contention for the event at Jumeirah Golf Estates.

"Sorry to say that I will miss the DP World Tour Championship due to my rib injury," Stenson, who won the Race to Dubai last year, wrote in a post on Instagram.

"I hope to be back soon to battle it out with the boys. Many thanks for your support and best wishes."

The final event of the European Tour season will see Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia battle to be crowned the 2017 Race to Dubai champion.
