Aston Villa plan to make bid for Championship top scorer Clarke

Aston Villa plan to make bid for Championship top scorer Clarke Aston Villa are wanting to sign Championship top scorer Leon Clarke in January as they look to buy a new striker. The 32-year-old Sheffield United striker has scored 13 goals in 16 games this season for Chris Wilder’s side and that tally includes 9 goals in just his last 4 matches. He has been key to their promotion push this season after helping the side into the Championship from League 1 last term. Steve Bruce is in need of a new striker after losing last season’s top scorer Jonathan Kodjia to an ankle injury which he picked up on international duty and could see him miss the rest of the season. This is another blow for the Ivory Coast international who broke his ankle last April and has subsequently been limited to eight appearances this season. The Villans’ boss sees the experienced Clarke as a potential difference maker as he moves to boost his striking options in a bid to gain promotion back to the Premier League. Sheffield United will most likely resist any move from a promotion chasing rival but with Clarke also entering the final 18 months of his Blades contract, Villa may be able to coax the player away from Bramall Lane.

Aston Villa earned another valuable point last Friday as they salvaged a creditable draw against Leeds thanks to Henri Lansbury’s first goal for the club.

This point leaves them in fifth place in the table on thirty-six points, four points above Ipswich who sit just outside the play-off places and seven points adrift of automatic promotion.

Next up for Villa is a home match against Millwall, who are currently sitting in seventeenth place, six points above the relegation zone.

Many people will be expecting Villa to brush Millwall aside on Saturday afternoon, but they have proven over the season that they can be very difficult to break down and defeat.

Sam Johnstone hoping Leeds will fear Aston Villa

Sam Johnstone hoping Leeds will fear Aston Villa Aston Villa shot-stopper Sam Johnstone reveals that he is hoping that promotion rivals Leeds United will fear Aston Villa as they face each other tonight at Elland Road, according to a report on the Express and Star. The goalkeeper believes that Villa’s recent form should be feared by their rivals ahead of the clash. Villa have won their last three games and have only lost twice since the end of August in a very consistent period of form from Steve Bruce’s men, which sees them sit fourth in the Championship table. Johnstone said: “Friday is a massive game. Coming off the back of three straight wins, hopefully they (Leeds) are more scared of us. It’s all about confidence.” “If you are full of confidence it is a different game. We will be up for it, hopefully we can get three points.” Last season when the sides met at Elland Road, Leeds went on to defeat Villa 2-0 and Bruce will be confident that a similar result will not happen again this season as his side have improved massively. Villa have already won four times away from home this season, which took them the whole season to achieve in the last campaign.

Preston currently sit 9th in the table, 5 points behind Villa , and after having only picked up 2 points from their last 4 matches, they will be desperate to pick up a win against Villa in order to keep their own hopes of a play-off position alive. They are likely to play with XI men behind the ball and hope to hit Villa on the counter, so it is unlikely to be a very high scoring game. Villa will have to be patient and hope that their play-makers don’t have an off day.
