Dustin Johnson came within inches of an astonishing hole-in-one at the par-four sixth hole on day three of the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii.

The world No 1 launched a huge drive straight at the target - 382 yards away - with the group ahead still putting out as his ball arrived on the green and caused a surprise for Chris Stroud's caddie as he tended the flag for his player.

And, just as commentator Frank Nobilo suggested the caddie should "take the flag out", he did just that as Johnson's ball missed the hole by a few inches before rolling off the back of the green.

Johnson's drive settled in the rear fringe and measured 399 yards, but his eagle putt came up eight feet short and he then missed the birdie attempt to walk off with a disappointing par.
