Chelsea looking to avoid sacking Conte this season

Chelsea looking to avoid sacking Conte this season Chelsea do not want to sack Antonio Conte this season and would rather see him leave by ‘mutual consent’ in the summer. The Telegraph reports that the current Premier League champions do not want to make a change while a place in the top four remains up for grabs. The financial outlay to sack Conte this season would be far greater than it would be if he was to leave at the end of the season, which may well play a part in the club’s decision. Pressure is mounting on Conte after Chelsea’s heavy defeat away at Watford on Monday night. Reports had suggested that the game at Vicarage Road could have been the tipping point, but that does not seem to be the case. With Liverpool due to play on Sunday, Chelsea could start Monday night’s game against West Brom five points outside of the top four.

West Brom have sacked chairman John Williams and chief executive Martin Goodman as owner Guochuan Lai responded to the club's poor run of form. The Baggies lost 3-0 at Chelsea on Monday and are bottom of the Premier League table with 11 games left.

West Brom have sacked chairman John Williams and chief executive Martin Goodman.

The pair have been given notice of termination of their contracts and been placed on garden leave with immediate effect, the club announced on Tuesday.

Following his recent appointment as a director of WBA Holdings, the club’s controlling company, Mark Jenkins will return as chief executive.

A club spokesman said: “We would like to thank John and Martin for all their efforts since their appointments and wish them well for the future.”

The sackings come with Albion bottom of the Premier League and seven points from the safety line following Monday’s 3-0 defeat at Chelsea, with the club citing poor results as a catalyst for change.

Press Association Sport understands the club have no plans to appoint a replacement chairman this season.
