“It’s the Premier League, a club which has won more titles in the past ten years than any other. It’s a massive club and I am very proud to be here and to carry on my career in the Premier League.”

Wenger reveals why Arsenal let key attacker leave in January

Wenger reveals why Arsenal let key attacker leave in January Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has offered an explanation as to why he sanctioned the sale of Olivier Giroud to Chelsea in January. The France international completed a move thought to be worth in the region of £15m on the final day of the January transfer window, with Arsenal deeming him to be surplus to their requirements. The Gunners had signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for a club-record fee from Borussia Dortmund, meaning that there was no more room for Giroud in the Arsenal squad, especially with summer signing Alexandre Lacazette still available. Wenger, as quoted by Football London, explained why he felt it was the right call to allow Giroud to seek pastures new following the arrival of Aubameyang. “Olivier was massively popular inside the dressing room and club. But he wanted more playing time, he has not played many Premier League games and he wants to go to the World Cup as well, that’s why I opened the door when Aubameyang came in to give him a chance to get the competition he deserves.” “Ideally you want him to go to clubs who do not compete with you, but on the other hand it was a bit linked to the Aubameyang deal and he’s just had a third baby so it was very difficult on the family side to leave London.” Giroud has been recruited by Chelsea for the purpose of offering struggling striker Alvaro Morata some competition for his place in the starting line-up. Chelsea wanted to sign a target man in January and have done so with Giroud. He proved to be a key player for Arsenal over the years and Wenger will hope that the decision to offload him will not come back to haunt him as the season progresses. “And I believe we owe Olivier Giroud a lot for his commitment, his dedication to the club and his love for the club was absolutely exceptional. So it was difficult to turn it down because it was a competitive club.

Asked why he had been keen on the move, Giroud told the Chelsea website: "The most important thing was talking with the coach (Antonio Conte). "I wanted to stay in the Premier League, and Chelsea for me is perfect because I can even stay in London.

Olivier Giroud has described Chelsea as the perfect club for him, just days after leaving Arsenal. “I wanted to stay in the Premier League, amd Chelsea for me is perfect because I can even stay in London.”

Giroud will hope to retain his starting place under Conte, with the World Cup to come at the end of the season. The ex-Montpellier forward will know that France have an abundance of quality strikers, and he must perform if he is to persuade Didier Deschamps that he is a useful tool for the tournament in Russia.

Next up for Chelsea is Hull in the FA Cup fifth round, in which Giroud will hope to be given the nod once again.

“I had five amazing years there (at Arsenal), but now it’s a new chapter of my career and I am focused 100 per cent on the Blues to reach our targets. I’m very happy to be here.”

Azpilicueta calls on Chelsea to be "perfect" at Barcelona .
Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta has called on his teammates to turn in the “perfect” performance when they travel to Barcelona next week, as reported by Goal. The Blues will make the trip to Spain as they play out the second leg of their round of 16 tie in the Champions League. Chelsea drew 1-1 with Barca in the first leg, with Willian and Lionel Messi netting for their respective sides. “There is still a lot to play for and it will be an interesting game, we know it’s going to be tough but our performance showed what we are capable of doing and we will try our best to qualify.” It’s sure to be a hugely challenging task for Antonio Conte’s side at Camp Nou on Wednesday, though, and Azpilicueta has admitted that Chelsea must maintain focus and avoid silly mistakes at the home of the La Liga leaders. “We have to play a perfect game, we know we are playing against very good players in a tough stadium but we are confident and we will try to qualify.” Barcelona head into the match with a narrow advantage as a result of their away goal but Chelsea will fancy their chances, knowing that they came close to finding the net on more than one occasion against Ernesto Valverde’s side in midweek. “After two tough defeats a few weeks ago the team responded with two wins against West Brom, and then Hull City in the FA Cup. Against Barcelona it was also a great performance from the team, nearly perfect.” Azpilicueta has been typically reliable for the Blues this season and will hope to be at his best when he returns to his homeland to face Barca.
