James Milner is not included in Liverpool's squad for the Premier League season finale against Brighton and Hove Albion - but Adam Lallana returns to sit on the bench at Anfield.

Midfielder Milner misses out as a precautionary measure due to a muscle issue, according to the club's official website.

Jurgen Klopp explained the decision to leave out the 32-year-old, who now faces a race to be fit in time for the Champions League final against Real Madrid on May 26.

"It’s a little injury. It’s serious enough to put him out for today; he couldn't train the whole week," the German manager said prior to kick-off.

'Chelsea the biggest game of my career...then Brighton!' - Klopp downplays looming Real Madrid clash The Liverpool manager is not thinking about the Champions League final yet, with a huge clash against Chelsea to come on SundayJurgen Klopp says Liverpool's Premier League clash with Chelsea is the biggest game of his career, as it comes before the Champions League final against Real Madrid.

Even though the final is a fortnight after the Brighton game , the likes of James Milner should not be playing on Sunday. “After missing that final in 1994, I vowed to never miss another through injury . Write CSS OR LESS and hit save.

Arsenal Bournemouth Brighton & Hove Albion Burnley Chelsea Crystal Palace Everton Liverpool star James Milner will miss all of the Reds' tour games in Germany. But boss Jurgen Klopp said: “It was clear from the first day there’s a little bit of tendon involved, so that means that it’s around 10 days.

Liverpool are worryingly short of midfield options for Kiev - Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is certain to miss the game with a serious knee injury, while a back issue continues to keep Emre Can out of action.

However, Klopp will be boosted by the return of Lallana ahead of the clash with Madrid.

The England international has not featured since a brief substitute appearance against Crystal Palace at the end of March due to a hamstring injury, but is among the substitutes on Sunday.

"Good, of course. [He is] an important option for us," Klopp added on Lallana. "How long [he could play], I don’t know – we have to see what’s possible. But he trained completely normally, and that’s of course good for us in these times."

As for the XI against Brighton, captain Jordan Henderson is recalled while Sadio Mane plays from the start despite an injury scare during the week.

Forward Dominic Solanke is also included in an attacking team for Liverpool, who know a win will secure them a top-four finish for a second successive Premier League campaign.

Emre Can to travel with Liverpool to training camp .
Emre Can will travel with the Liverpool squad to their training camp in Marbella. The midfielder will rejoin his team-mates in training after receiving treatment on a back injury in Germany. There, he will be assessed by the club’s medical staff before a decision is taken on whether he is able to return to full training. The 24-year-old midfielder is aiming to prove his fitness in time for the Champions League final against Real Madrid in Kiev on May 26. Can hasn’t played for Liverpool since being forced off against Watford in mid-March and that lack of game time has resulted in him losing a place in Germany’s World Cup squad. James Milner will also travel with the squad to the training camp. The Reds’ vice-captain is expected to be back in training after missing last weekend’s 4-0 win over Brighton due to a muscle injury. Klopp’s squad will regroup after being granted two days off following the last game of the season. The Reds will be based in Marbella for four days as they focus on the challenge of overcoming Real Madrid. This will be their second time back in Costa del Sol this season having had a similarly long break back in February between matches.
