Joe Gomez out for the rest of the season and probably the World Cup

Joe Gomez out for the rest of the season and probably the World Cup Joe Gomez will not play again this season, and he’s likely to miss the World Cup too, after undergoing surgery on his injured ankle. The 20-year-old played through the pain during Liverpool’s draws with West Brom and Stoke City and it appears that he wasn’t quite aware of the seveirty of the injury. However, the defender needed surgery to repair the issue and as such, he won’t be part of Liverpool’s squad for the Champions League final in Kiev at the end of May. Gomez was also likely to be included in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad after impressing in his recent appearances, but it looks unlikely that he’ll be fit enough to be part of the 23-man contingent that goes to Russia to represent England. Whilst it was unlikey that Gomez would have started the Champions League final if fit, he would have been named as a substitute, but that will no longer be the case. The news that Gomez will miss the World Cup could open the door for either Trent Alexander-Arnold or Nathaniel Clyne to be called up in his place, although neither offer the defensive versatility that Gomez would have provided to Southgate.

It is that time of year again. If you were Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who would you keep or sell from the current squad?

The Reds have just secured a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League, while the club also take on Real Madrid in the Champions League final in Kiev on May 26.

However, despite Liverpool's impressive campaign, Klopp will be looking to do plenty of business in the transfer market when the summer window opens.

The German is already facing the prospect of losing key midfielder Emre Can, whose contract at Anfield expires at the end of June.

But who else should the Liverpool boss look to offload during the close season as he tries to reshape his squad in order to challenge title winners Manchester City next season?

Germany leave Can out of World Cup squad .
Emre Can has been left out of Germany’s 27-man provisional World Cup squad. The 24-year-old hasn’t featured for Liverpool since mid-March when he suffered a back injury during the 5-0 win over Watford. Twitter: #ZSMMN #WM2018 #DieMannschaft https://t.co/cTPkH2PWRA (@DFB_Team) That lay-off has been enough for Joachim Löw to overlook the midfielder as he feels his fitness would be an issue for the physical two-way player at the tournament. Can’s contract expires at Anfield this summer and he is expected to leave, with Juventus almost certain to be his next club. It is proving to be a tough time for Can as he is set to miss both teh Champions league final and World Cup, in the peak of his career. Making his debut for the national side in 2015, Can has 20 caps for Germany. He went to Euro 2016 and started in the 2-0 semi-final loss to France. Four other Premier League players were included in the squad. Manchester City duo Leroy Sane and Ilkay Gundogan were selected alongside Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil and Antonio Rudiger of Chelsea.
