Stoke City have released veteran pair Glen Johnson and Stephen Ireland following their relegation from the Premier League.

Johnson and Ireland made nine and four league appearances respectively in 2017-18 as the Potters dropped into the Championship after a 10-year stay in the top flight, with neither player offered a new contract.

Former England international Johnson joined Stoke on a free transfer from Liverpool in 2015, and played 57 times for the club in the Premier League.

Ireland struggled to establish himself as a first-team regular, having signed from Aston Villa in 2014, with injury problems hindering the midfielder.

Stoke have offered back-up goalkeeper Jakob Haugaard a new deal, with speculation over Jack Butland's future persisting.

Roma not in the race to land Liverpool target Shaqiri .
Liverpool have been boosted in the race to sign Xherdan Shaqiri from Stoke, with Calciomercato reporting that Roma are no longer interested in signing the player. The Serie A giants had been linked with a swoop for Shaqiri, who is set to leave Stoke in the near future following their relegation last term. Liverpool have been heavily linked with a deal to bring the Swiss international to Anfield this summer, with the club prepared to pay the player’s £12 million relegation release clause. Shaqiri is likely being targeted by Jurgen Klopp as a rotational offer, with the Reds boss keen to add quality in depth to his attacking options. The former Inter Milan and Bayern Munich star has already confirmed that he intends to depart Stoke this summer and this has put a number of Premier League clubs on red alert. Clubs such as Everton and Southampton had been heavily linked, but Liverpool are understood to be leading the race to land the enigmatic wide player.
