The vibe and the momentum has shifted violently throughout these Stanley Cup playoffs.

We can wind it all the way back to the opening round, when the team that currently holds a 2-1 lead in the Stanley Cup Final was absolutely on the ropes against the Blue Jackets. The Capitals, wearing years of early exits and disappointments on their shoulders, lost the first two games at home before rallying to knock out Columbus in six.

How Vegas became the most successful expansion team in sports history

Hockey in Vegas is well on its way to transforming the NHL in the best way possible. Second- best was Washington, D.C., which checked in at 16.02. Sin City is going absolutely bonkers for the Golden Knights .

Each Monday during the NHL playoffs, Rob Mixer takes a look at the biggest storylines from the hockey week that was. The West is downright nasty, and the Golden Knights have their hands full with a Los Angeles Kings team that knows how to win and always finds another gear once the

The Jets looked like an unstoppable force in their Game 1 win over the Golden Knights in the Western Conference finals … and then they simply fell flat. Those are just two examples of how the script has so quickly flipped this spring and early summer, which has produced some improbable comebacks and set the stage for a surprising-yet-totally-fun Cup Final.

Which leads me to this point: If we’re following the plot here, we should be burying the Golden Knights, who (outside of goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury) have only looked decent at times since capturing Game 1 at T-Mobile Arena last week.

They’ve lost the momentum, their depth is struggling to score, and Braden Holtby is out-dueling Fleury.

Stanley Cup Final: 3 takeaways from Golden Knights' Game 1 win The Golden Knights are three wins away from winning it all.Vegas scored three unanswered goals in the third period to seal the victory, and this was the definition of a team win.

The Golden Knights are already off to the best start of any expansion team in NHL history, so now we really have to start asking if this This team should be so much better than it is at this point and it only seems to be taking steps backwards. — Adam Gretz is a writer for Pro Hockey Talk on NBC Sports.

It’s a recipe that sets up quite well for the Capitals, but we’ve learned this lesson, haven’t we? It’s downright foolish to count Vegas out at this point, especially given what they’ve done to get to this point.

Gerard Gallant’s team, despite its arranged-marriage composition going into this season, has become one that answers the bell when challenged. The Golden Knights were doubted at every turn in their first year of existence — “they’ll cool off eventually” to “they might make the playoffs, but…” to “they’ll lose to a deeper team in the playoffs” — and are three wins away from a championship.

We would be doing ourselves a great disservice to think that, despite the depth and strong defensive play of the Capitals over the last few weeks, the Golden Knights don’t have a fighting chance to turn this series around.

Stanley Cup Final 2018: Capitals' Barry Trotz thought penalty should've been called on Ryan Reaves' goal Barry Trotz wasn't a fan of Ryan Reaves' goal in the third period, which turned out to be one of the game's deciding goals. With the Golden Knights conceding a goal just over a minute into the third period, Reaves answered 1:31 later to put Vegas right back in the game. But as Reaves looked for his teammates to celebrate, Capitals head coach Barry Trotz was looking towards the officials for a penalty call on the Golden Knights' forward.

Here’s a working checklist for Vegas as the series moves to Game 4 on Monday in D.C.:

1. Find a way to contain Evgeny Kuznetsov. If the Capitals’ star center were to miss any extended time, perhaps the Golden Knights might have a slightly easier road. But he was back in a big way in Game 3 and delivered a tremendous performance en route to Washington’s win.

2. Keep those guys off the power play. Ask any opponent that’s been knocked out by these Capitals — you cannot survive if you keep giving them opportunities on the power play.

3. Get your top guys back on track. It’s been a quiet-ish couple of games for the Golden Knights’ No. 1 line but it’s tough to see them staying this way much longer.

This is a Golden Knights team that’s dispatched the Kings, Sharks and Jets to reach the Cup Final in their inaugural season — proving there’s no style of game they can’t play, no wrinkle you’ll throw at them they can’t handle. But they’ve got their hands full with the Capitals, a determined Alex Ovechkin, and a goaltender who is working playoff magic at just the right time.

Let’s just agree on this: we won’t count them out, because we’ve learned that lesson a few times before.
