  Everton rejected chance to sign Harry Maguire and Andrew Robertson Harry Maguire and Andrew Roberston both had fantastic seasons for Leicester City and Liverpool respectively last year, but both could have been playing for Everton if former boss Ronald Koeman didn’t reject the chance to sign the duo from Hull City. Speaking on TalkSport, another former Everton manager, Sam Allardyce, revealed that the Blues had the chance to sign the two defenders after the Tigers’ relegation, but Koeman turned down the opportunity. Robertson, meanwhile, has established himself as one of the league’s best left-backs and was a major factor in Liverpool’s run to the Champions League final. With the transfer window set to close this afternoon, the Blues look likely to have Yerry Mina joining up with new left-back Lucas Digne, but things could have been different had Koeman decided to take up the chance to sign Maguire and Roberston.

As endorsements go, getting one from arguably the greatest footballer of all time isn’t a bad one and that’s exactly what Liverpool have got as they look forward to the start of the new Premier League season.

Brazilian legend Pele took to social media to tip Liverpool to win the Premier Leauge title and give his backing to a couple of his fellow countrymen.

The business that Liverpool did in the summer, bringing in Alisson, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri, has given the squad some much-needed strength in depth and although Manchester City are still huge favourites, the Reds have made strides to ensure that they too can fight for the title.

The Reds get their season underway against West Ham at Anfield on Sunday afternoon, and they’ll be looking for a repeat of the performance against the Hammers in the last campaign, where they ran out as 4-1 winners.
