The NFL responded Friday to reports of a deflated football used Thursday during the Steelers' and Eagles' first preseason game and admitted one ball was "defective" as the league continues an investigation.

"All footballs were in compliance with NFL rules following the pregame inspection process and all proper procedures were followed," NFL vice president of football communications Michael Signora said in a statement, via NFL.com. "In the third quarter, a football that was found to be defective was removed from play, will be sent back to Wilson for review."

The statement comes after sideline reporter Howard Eskin of WIP radio in Philadelphia shared on Twitter at least one of Pittsburgh's footballs was very deflated, saying, "It was like a marshmallow."

The issue of deflated footballs became a big storyline after the 2014 season when the NFL launched an investigation into the Patriots and Tom Brady after their AFC Championship Game against the Colts in January 2015. Officials replaced the balls used in the first half after the Colts reported the balls the Patriots were using had been under-inflated.
