RANCHI: Former Bihar Chief Minister Jagannath Mishra on Monday surrendered before a CBI court here to serve his sentence in a multi-million rupee fodder scam case. He was sent to Birsa Munda central jail of Ranchi after he surrendered in the court.

Ranchi - A special CBI court on Monday sent former Bihar chief minister Jagannath Mishra to jail when he surrendered before it after nine days of his conviction in a fodder scam case on January 24.

Earlier, the court had convicted as many as 50 accused, including two former Bihar chief ministers Lalu Prasad and Mishra, in the scam case in which Rs 33.13 crore were fraudulently withdrawn from Chaibasa treasury against the annual allotment of Rs 7.10 lakh for the year 1992-93. It had awarded five years of rigorous imprisonment to Prasad and Mishra and also slapped a fine of Rs 10 lakh on each of them. The court had also acquitted six accused involved in the case.

The court, while delivering the verdict on January 24, had found that out of the total 56 accused involved in the case, the two - Mishra and Dr B N Sharma - were not present to hear the verdict. Mishra had informed the court that he would not be able to appear because of his wife's demise two days back. The court had then issued warrants of arrest against the duo.

Mishra on Monday surrendered before the court of special judge SS Prasad who soon forwarded him to the Birsa Munda Central Jail to serve the sentence.

Mishra is currently facing trial in two fodder scam cases out the five registered against him by the CBI way back in 1996. He was acquitted in one of the three cases that had been disposed of so far. He got convicted in two cases.
