Protesters in Uttar Pradesh’ s Allahabad city staged a demonstration and set a bus on fire on Monday after a 24-year-old Dalit student , who was attacked by a group of men with bricks and iron rods, died of his injuries, police said.

Protesters in Uttar Pradesh’s Allahabad city staged a demonstration and set a bus on fire on Monday after a 24-year-old Dalit student, who was attacked by a group of men with bricks and iron rods, died of his injuries, police said.

Dilip Saroj, a law student at Allahabad Degree College, died at a private hospital early on Sunday morning. “The bus was on its way to Teliyarganj when some youths stopped it and asked the passengers and the driver to step out. The poured some inflammable material on the bus and set it on fire,” a police official said.

The official said that fire-tenders reached the spot and doused the fire but the bus was completely gutted. They added that the driver, conductor and all the passengers of the bus were safe. “We are trying to identify the trouble-makers. Strict action will be initiated against them,” senior superintendent of police Akash Kulhary said as he took stock of the situation and spoke to eyewitnesses.

Later, inspector general of police Ramit Sharma also reached the spot. A group of protesters earlier held a demonstration at Colonelganj police station demanding the arrest of the people involved in the incident.

Police said they also took out a procession from the Colonelganj police station to the district magistrate’s office. They, however, are yet to ascertain if the same people torched the bus.

Saroj was beaten up after an altercation with some people at a restaurant in Katra area on Saturday night. He was dragged out of the restaurant and attacked with iron rods and bricks.

His murder triggered outrage on social media after videos of the assault shot by people at the eatery was shared on WhatsApp and Facebook.

One of the three suspects was arrested on the basis of the video and three policemen, including the Katra police outpost in-charge, were suspended for negligence after the murder. Colonelganj police station’s inspector Awadhesh Singh said Munna Singh Chauhan, a waiter at the restaurant who was seen attacking Saroj on his head with a stick in a CCTV footage, was arrested on Sunday.

“Police have also detained restaurant owner Amit Upadhyay. The other three accused, including a travelling ticket examiner (TTE) Vijay Shankar of Sultanpur, are still at large,” Singh added.
