The chief minister has called the bypolls in Gorakhpur and the south-eastern constituency of Phulpur "a rehearsal for next year's Lok Sabha polls." So he's hoping neither Congressman Sureetha Kareem nor Samajwadi Party candidate Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel has reason to smile when the last vote is counted.

Now, a loss for the BJP in Gorakhpur wouldn't do much to dent its impressive 272-seat majority* in the Lok Sabha. Nevertheless, it would be a crushing blow. The BJP hasn't lost here since 1991.

In 1989, Yogi Adityanath's guru, Mahant Avedyanath, won in Gorakhpur. He contested, and won, in 1991, on a BJP ticket.

Adityanath, now the head priest of the Gorakhnath Math, won his first election here in 1998. He won again in 1999, 2004, 2009, and 2014.

He became Uttar Pradesh's chief minister in 2017 after the BJP swept to power in the state, arguably the most coveted prize on India's political chessboard.

New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh bypolls were held on March 11, Sunday, in Gorakhpur constituency as the seat was vacated by Yogi Adityanath after taking over as the Chief Minister in September last year. A total of 43 per cent polling was recorded in Gorakhpur where 10 candidates fought the Gorakhpur


On Sunday, bypolls were also held in Bihar - in the Lok Sabha constituency of Araria, and the assembly constituencies of Jehanabad and Bhabhua.

These polls constitute the first electoral test for Bihar's leader, Nitish Kumar, since he dramatically ditched the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Congress for a new alliance with the BJP. (Inputs from PTI)
