Mystery of the death of 11 members of a family in Delhi's Burari remains unsolved. Every passing day throws up additional details in police probe giving fresh twists to the already murky tales. More diaries have been found from the house. The entries made in those diaries point to a "five-year-plan" for "salvation rituals". Curiously, the "state of kitchen" in the house shows that the family was preparing for morning breakfast and had their recipes planned.

The family of the deceased was known as "Bhatia Family" in the locality. Ten of them were found hanging from an iron-mesh in the ceiling July 1. The oldest member of the family, - the 77-year-old Narayani Devi - was lying on the floor in another room of the house.

What's new about Burari deaths?

  1. Ten more diaries have come to the light taking the total number of diaries recovered from the Bhatia family house to 11. These diaries have entries for past 11 years. Coincidently, 11 members of the family were found dead. And, the day after their death, photographs went viral that showed 11 pipes emerging from one of the walls of Bhatia house.
  2. One of the diary entries hints that the deaths of the Burari family members could have been planned five years ago as a means to attain "moksha" (salvation). The entry was made on October 21, 2013. It says "invocation for first of the five years that (we) have got". Another diary entry says that Sunday is the "day of punishment (saza)" in Kaliyug (the Age of Kali). All the deaths took place in the wee hours on Sunday, July 1.
  3. Narayani Devi's husband, Bhopal Das died in 2007. He had served in the Indian Army and taken voluntary retirement after a fall from a horse. The family believed that his spirit visited Lalit Bhatia, the youngest son. The diary entries were made "after receiving messages from the spirit" of Bhopal Das as "revealed" to Lalit, who wrote them himself or dictated to his niece Priyanka as instructions to the family members.
  4. CCTV footage recorded from the camera installed outside a house opposite the Bhatia family's home shows two members of the family carrying stools and wires from their plywood shop to the house they were found hanging.
  5. The elder daughter-in-law of the Bhatia family, Savita and her daughter Neetu are seen in the CCTV footage bringing five stools. The same were later used for hanging of 10 of the family members. At around 10.15 pm on Saturday night, the youngest members of the family - Dhruv and Shivam - were captured on CCTV camera carrying electrical wires from the plywood shop. All the 10 members of the family were found hanging by these electrical wires.

  1. The first police team that arrived on the spot found things in the kitchen that indicated that the family had breakfast on mind. Bengal gram was kept in a bowl filled with water suggesting preparation for breakfast the next morning. Another utensil was there to set curd for breakfast. If the family had planned death or suicide on mind, why would anyone prepare for breakfast the next morning?
  2. If the claims made in the diaries are true, why two other family members - Narayani Devi's eldest son Dinesh, who lives in Rajasthan, and daughter Sujata, who lives in Haryana, - did not know about Lalit being "possessed" by his father's spirit? They have refuted the claims made in the diaries.
  3. If the family was planning to attain "salvation" by following the "ritualistic death" for five years, why no one else ever knew about it? None of the relatives or two other family members has told police about family planning mass suicide out of any belief.
  4. Narayani Devi's grand-daughter Priyanka was supposed to get married by the year-end. She was engaged only last month. Why 11 members would plan death if the family was preparing for the wedding?
  5. Diaries indicate that Lalit was a dominating force in the family in the matters of performing puja ceremonies and rituals. But did 10 people - aged 15 to 77 - so easily believe that Lalit's claims sourced to his father's "spirit" would help them attain "salvation" and "rise from the death" after hanging themselves? This seems highly implausible. Police said that they were probing the mysterious case from all angles including that of murder.
