Uniformed gardaí, supported by armed members of the Regional Support Unit (RSU), had been searching for the individual, who is understood to be in his 30s, after the two animals were shot and killed in the Newmarket area last night.

Unconfirmed reports indicated that another shot may have been fired in the general direction of a vehicle.

The shooting followed a domestic dispute.

The incident was not linked to a feud or any type of criminal incident.

Gardai had appealed to members of the public not to approach the man but to alert officers to his whereabouts if spotted.

The man was repeatedly urged to surrender the firearm and surrender himself so that urgent medical assistance can be provided for him.

The search for the man was focused on woodland outside Newmarket.
