RTE news is reporting that an as yet unpublished report by Assistant Garda Commissioner Michael O'Sullivan into the breath test controversy has found that some gardaí were making up the figures and in some cases were exaggerating them by as much as 300pc.Other contributory factors in the recording of the false tests were found to be systems and IT failures, a misinterpretation of policy, and failures of governance and oversight.

The shock news yesterday evening was that Clonbrien Hero, winner of the Irish Laurels at Curraheen Park in late July, has tested positive.

He returned a positive test for Benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine, on three occasions during the competition. The matter will be passed on to the Control Committee which will conduct an inquiry.

Clonbrien Hero, which earlier won the Produce Stakes at Clonmel, is trained by Graham Holland for Kay Murphy.

The semi-finals of the BoyleSports Irish Derby will be run on Saturday and the Holland-trained Sonic is the 9-4 favourite with Good News at 4-1, and 11-2 bar.

Meanwhile, there have been two defections from Saturday's BoyleSports Derby Plate semi-finals. Tyrur Hugo has been withdrawn from the first semi-final while Kilgraney Denver will be an absentee from the second heat.
