Dane Loakman (16) from the Castlefen estate in Sallins, Co Kildare, was crossing the main Clane road to catch a bus at around 7.45am when he was hit by a van being driven towards Clane as his mother Alison looked on from the front door.

Dane suffered devastating injuries and was rushed to Naas General Hospital before being transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.

But his injuries were too grave to survive and he died on Tuesday evening.

His funeral mass in the Church of Our Lady and the Guardian Angels in Sallins today was full to overflowing as family, friends, neighbour's, school friends from Pipers Hill in Naas and the local Youth Reach organisation came to pay their respects.

Dane is survived by his mother Alison and brother Codey, and a large extended family.

“When tragedy struck on Monday morning and Dane struggled to hold on to life his mother was there by his side at that terrible moment of deep heartache,” said Fr Liam Morgan.

“Alison witnessed what no mother should ever have to see - an accident involving her son, her child, who she has loved with every fibre of her being,” he added.

Symbols brought to the altar to represent Dane’s life included his mobile phone, and X Box controller, a vape device, and photographs.

“It is very hard hard to comprehend what happened. If only we could turn back time, but sadly that is not possible,” said Fr Morgan.

“For Alison I've no doubt that her life was summed up in her two boys. Dane had grown into a fine handsome young man, a chap that proudly had no sense of fear, was liable to try anything, say anything, lovable in every way, adventurous. It is so painful to lose a son, a child, and for Codey to lose a brother, a buddy,” he added.

Prayers were also said for the emergency services and medical staff at Naas General and Beaumont hospitals who tried so hard to save Dane’s life.

The local football team formed a guard of honour, and a large number of mourners listened to proceedings on loudspeakers from the car park because the church was so full.

After the mass, Dane’s remains were brought to Bodenstown cemetery for burial.
