Frances Fitzgerald: The Fine Gael 'matriarch' who fought her way up long before gender quotas When Leo Varadkar officially launched his Fine Gael leadership campaign last May, Tanaiste Frances Fitzgerald appeared by his side, hailing him as the man who could renew the party and take on the Opposition. Just days after Enda Kenny had announced his departure, Fitzgerald — once considered a leadership contender herself — was the most significant figure yet to throw her support behind the would-be Taoiseach. And it gave Varadkar serious momentum in the early days of the campaign which helped him sweep to victory.

Mr Kenny was staying in Killarney, Co Kerry, where he has a holiday home and was dining out following a day spent climbing Carrauntoohill mountain.

He was eating a steak in The Laurels restaurant when he began to choke and needed to be given the Heimlich Manoeuvre.

The former Fine Gael leader told The Irish Star that restaurant owner Con O'Leary's quick thinking saved his life.

"He did the Heimlich manoeuvre on me, which meant that I lived to tell the tale."

Mr O'Leary, 79, revealed that he had learned the lifesaving technique after he had a similar experience.

He had been eating steak alone when he began to choke on a piece.

Almost on the verge of the collapse, he went towards the door and hit himself off the doorjamb which dislodged the morsel of steak.

The terrifying incident prompted him to learn the Heimlich manoeuvre which he's since used three times on others, including Mr Kenny and a tourist while on holidays in Spain.

Recalling the incident with Mr Kenny, Con said: "We had been talking away for two or three minutes and I walked away from him but then everything went silent and I looked around and the two of them were standing up.
