A Kerry teenager died in the arms of her heartbroken parents at the weekend after a battle with a rare illness.

Mags McElligott announced with ‘a heavy heart’ that her ‘beautiful princess’ Tina McElligott, aged 17, has passed away.

‘Tina, you will be in the sun, the wind and the rain. You will be in the air we breath with every breath we take,’ she wrote.

The teenager had suffered from Alpers disease, a progressive condition which leads to seizures, liver disease and dementia.

The rare illness that causes dozens of seizures daily prompted Tina to go to Spain last year to seek medicinal cannabis.

Tina’s parents Mags and Martin previously criticised the Government for stalling the introduction of medicinal cannabis which they claim could give sufferers of various illnesses a better quality of life.

The disease is a progressive neurological disorder that starts in childhood and is often complicated by serious liver disease.

The life expectancy of those with the disease is from three months to 12 years after onset.
