The 24-year-old was stabbed at Fitzgerald's Pub on Sexton Street in Thomondgate in the late hours of Saturday night and died from his injuries.

He was in the pub socialising after watching the World Cup quarter-finals.

Mr O'Connor was pronounced dead at University Hospital Limerick in the early hours of Sunday.

Gardai are investigating the fatal stabbing and have arrested a man aged in his 40s in connection with the probe.

He is currently detained at Henry Street Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Earlier on Monday, Fitzgerald's Pub shared a poignant tribute on Facebook, writing: "We here at Fitzgerald's bar and the Fitzgerald family would like to express our deepest sympathy to Jackie, Michael, Pa's sisters, grandparents and extended family on the sudden and needless death of their son and brother Pa O'Connor.

"We were all very fond of Pa here at Fitzgerald's.

"We are all devastated by what happened but are heartened by the support expressed by our local Thomondgate community and beyond.

"To our loyal customers and staff, thank you for your continued support through this difficult time."
