Met Eireann 's yellow weather warning will remain in place until 9am as they hint winter's icy grip It will be mainly dry this evening as temperatures plunge – but they could reach 8C tomorrow. Met Eireann forecast : “Staying dry this evening with the northeast winds continuing to ease down.

It looks like the heatwave is well and truly over with the weather set to deteriorate dramatically in the coming days.

While the mercury will reach 24C in parts today by the weekend we could see temperatures struggling to reach 20C.

This marks a dramatic change from the 32C high recorded on June 28 and the above average temperatures we have been enjoying over recent weeks.

Met Eireann confirmed: "A gradual transition to a more changeable or mixed weather pattern than of late is probable, with all parts seeing some spells of sunshine but rain or showers at times too with an Atlantic regime resuming."

Looking ahead to the weekend, they continued: "Any early mist patches on Friday will soon clear, giving way to another mostly dry day with alternating sunny spells and cloudy periods. The sunshine will turn hazier from the west as the day progresses, however. A few afternoon showers may occur in parts of Munster and south Leinster during the afternoon. Top temperatures ranging 20 to 23 degrees Celsius in light variable breezes.

"Warm on Saturday, with temperatures in low to mid-twenties generally, but a little cooler near the Atlantic Seaboard with temperatures of 17 to 20 degrees. The best of the sunshine and temperatures will be in the east and southeast, with cloudy and misty conditions prevailing further west.

The weather chiefs said: "A fresher day on Monday. Still a good deal of cloud around, producing scattered light showers, particularly over western areas, but some brighter and sunnier intervals also. Maximum temperatures of 18 to 22 degrees in westerly breezes.

"Similar conditions to Monday seem likely on Tuesday, with spells of sunshine interspersed with cloudier intervals and scattered light showers."
