Police are hunting a man who kidnapped an elderly couple from their home at gunpoint, forced them to withdraw hundreds of pounds from a town cashpoint and then drove them back again - before leaving the petrified woman with a kiss on the hand.

The couple, in their late 70s, were confronted in the middle of the night on March 16 when the man, armed with a gun and a knife, forced his way into their home in the village of Lowton, near Wigan.

He demanded money before bundling them into their own car, a black Land Rover Freelander, and driving them to a cash machine in the nearby town of Golborne, police said.

The man forced the terrified couple to take out hundreds of pounds, telling them he needed it to buy his dying daughter a present, before taking them back home.

After promising to leave their car in a supermarket car park for them to collect later he kissed the woman's hand and fled, driving the Land Rover towards the East Lancashire Road at around 4am.

But minutes later, travelling at 70mph, it collided with a roundabout and flipped over.

Detectives are now hunting 26-year-old Andrew Evans, from Heath Street in Golborne, over the robbery and kidnap and are appealing for the public to help trace him.

Detective Inspector Paul Rollinson, from Greater Manchester Police, said: "This prolonged and harrowing ordeal has left this innocent couple shaken and petrified after being violently confronted in their own home.

"It is extremely important that anyone who knows where Evans is tells us at the earliest opportunity.

"I'd like to remind people that anyone who knows where Evans is or anyone who is harbouring him and neglects to tell us will be committing an offence."

Anyone with information on Evans' whereabouts should call police on 0161 856 7225 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
