A suspected attacker has been "downed" after driving into a police vehicle on the Champs-Elysees, officials in Paris have said.

Police said there were no casualties but a security operation is under way and people are being asked to avoid the area.

A spokesman for the French interior ministry, Pierre-Henry Brandet, said the driver's car exploded as he tried to ram a police vehicle.

The driver, who appeared to have acted deliberately, was described as "most probably" dead.

Police say the situation is now under control, and a bomb disposal unit is now on the scene.

The Paris prosecutor's counter-terrorism unit has now opened an investigation into the incident.
