The British Parliament was briefly placed on lockdown on Thursday after a suspicious package was discovered in the building. The security alert, reportedly sparked by a letter sent to a peer containing white powder, lasted for an hour and a half before police declared the incident over .

Specialists are investigating Tuesday's package and there have been no reported injuries so far.

A police spokeswoman told Business Insider in a statement on Tuesday:

"Police were called at 09:49 hours on Tuesday, 13 March to reports of a suspicious package at Norman Shaw Buildings, Victoria Embankment, Westminster.

About seven hours later, Wellington police were called to the mailroom at Parliament after staff reported receiving a " suspicious " package . As a precaution, both bottles and their contents were taken to ESR.

Officers from London's Metropolitan Police were called to the same vicinity on Monday afternoon following reports of a suspicious package, which was later deemed non-harmful.

A Parliament spokesman told BI in a statement on Tuesday: "The Met Police are currently investigating suspicious items of mail in Norman Shaw North. We cannot provide any more details at this stage.

"This is further to the two items investigated yesterday, both of which were found to be non-harmful. The Police are investigating the content of the letters to identify any potential links."

Monday's package remains under investigation, a police spokeswoman told BI.
