The deputy chief executive of Oxfam resigns over what she says is the British charity's failure to adequately respond to past allegations that some staff had paid for sex with prostitutes.

It was made aware of allegations that some of its aid workers used prostitutes while they were working in the relief effort there, following a devastating earthquake in 2010.

"What is important in 2019 and beyond is that Oxfam rebuilds and renews in a way that is most relevant for the future and so continues to help as many people as possible around the world build better lives," Goldring added.

Oxfam chairwoman Caroline Thomson said it was with "great sadness" she accepted the resignation of the man who battled the "test of a lifetime" at the charity.

Asked if the resignation is related to how he dealt with the crisis, an Oxfam spokeswoman said: "No, it's absolutely not to do with his handling at all."
