In a fitting tribute to the dedicated couple, their ashes are now buried in plots side-by-side at a churchyard in Warsop, Nottinghamshire.  

The pair both lived in different nursing homes and she was never told of his death but sensed 'something was wrong', according to family.

Amy's daughter Eileen Sampson, 74, said: 'He never let on he was so ill, he must have been in agony.

'He was more bothered about mum and kept saying is 'mum ok'? It was a shock but I'm glad it happened quickly and he didn't suffer.

'When he died we didn't tell mum - we thought it would be cruel and she couldn't have coped. It was a hard choice.

'I believe she knew something was wrong because he didn't come to see her. My mother would watch everyone coming to see if he was coming behind. When mum was taken into hospital they had both decided that if one of them died, the other did not want to be resuscitated when they were poorly.

'I think she wanted to be with him - they did everything together.'

The couple lived next-door to each other for years before eventually becoming an item and falling in love.

Amy had five children with her first husband Cyril Barker. After Cyril died in 1969, the pair began dating and tied the knot at Mansfield Register Office in 1972.

Arnold was a miner after leaving the army while Amy worked at a factory before working in several canteens following the death of her first husband.

The couple lived together in a bungalow in Warsop, Nottinghamshire before Amy was admitted to Queens Medical Centre on Christmas Day last year with breathing problems.

A DEVOTED couple who were inseparable during almost 70 years together died just four hours apart . Ken and Audrey, both 83, met when they were 14 years old and passed away last Monday after they each suffered from dementia.

Amy's communication skills had already declined after she suffered a heart attack and stroke fours years ago. However, Arnold was always able to communicate with his wife using hand gestures, while still providing her with unwavering love and support.

Amy was then moved into a nursing home but suffered a fall in March this year and was admitted to the stroke unit at King's Mill Hospital.

It came after Arnold found out he had cancer in his kidneys and liver that had spread to his brain and was no longer well enough to look after her at home.

Arnold kept his diagnosis from family and Amy because he didn't want them to worry. He was moved to Sycamores nursing home in Mansfield, for palliative care but succumbed to the killer disease and died on April 30 this year.

Amy died on May 10 at King's Mill Hospital from a stroke complicated by several other aggravating medical conditions. She last saw Arnold at the beginning at March.

Eileen paid tribute to her mother and the man who had been a father to her and her sister and three brothers for nearly five decades.

'His mum and dad lived next-door at number 19 so they have known each other all their life really,' she added.

'After dad died in 1969 about three or four years later they got married and it wasn't a surprise, he has always been good to us. He said he would never try and take my dad's place, which he never has, and he treated the five of us like sons and daughters.'
