A mother has said beach signs about water quality need to be 'bigger and more obvious' after her daughter got sick from swimming at a beach.

Erin Town would often swim at the North Devon beach due to the recent hot spell.

But after she fell sick and was rushed to hospital it was revealed she had contracted cryptosporidiosis, which is a diarrhoea-related disease.

Erin was in hospital on July 24 before being discharged the following day. However she had to return on July 26 to be put on a drip.

What is cryptosporidium?

Cryptosporidium are tiny parasites found in most water sources. Symptoms can include stomach pains, weight loss, fever, watery diarrhoea and dehydration.  

It is high-risk infection and common in children under five.

The parasite, with the same name as the illness, enter the water through faecal release or contaminated bathers. Other causes can be ineffective water circulation and inappropriate handling and disposal of stools.

The 45-year-old said she wasn't aware that you weren't supposed to swim at that beach but her daughter would not be going back. 

She said that signs should be made 'bigger and more obvious'.

She said: 'I would hate for anyone else to go through this, it has been petrifying.'

A sign at the beach does outline that people should not swim there as it does have a poor water rating.

It also outlines no lifeguard service at the beach. 

In the Environment Agency water quality profile for the beach it states that 'bathing at this location is not advised due to poor water quality'.   

Samples taken between 2014 and 2017 repeatedly find a 'poor rating'.
